Non web-based dealer management systems are going to be on the way out within the next five years, says DMS specialist Pinewood.
The company pioneered pay per-user per-month web-based DMS systems with the launch of its Pinnacle product in 2002.
This has been followed by other DMS systems produced to a similar pattern such as those introduced by other providers.
Neville Briggs, Pinewood managing director, said that his company recognised that the launch of new and competing web-based DMS products helped to create a greater awareness among dealers of this type of technology - and would soon make traditional DMS systems a minority.
Pinewood managing director Neville Briggs commented:
"We welcome other technology providers waking up to the advantages of going along the web based route, as this strengthens the case for dealers taking a long hard look at this technology and where the DMS market is going.
"For decades, the DMS market has been based on server installed software for which the dealer has had to pay a huge sum up front. The hosted solution, which we pioneered with Pinnacle, is simply a much better solution.
"There are all kinds of advantages in going web-based - from the ability to access the DMS from any PC with Internet access to the way that systems can be instantly scaled up or down in line with each dealer's changing business needs. Importantly, being web based also means that each dealer is always using the latest version of the software."
The advantages of offering a web based DMS have helped Pinewood expand rapidly in recent years, challenging Kalamazoo for the number two slot in the DMS sector.
Briggs continued: "We were the first in our sector to adopt Microsoft web technology for DMS use and that investment has paid off for us. As a Certified Gold Partner our close relationship with Microsoft continues with the accreditation this month of Custom Development Solutions status.
"Having five years experience with web-based DMS systems under our belt we feel that the hosted pay-as-you-go delivery mechanism is only part of the story. Where we are now taking our DMS development is the introduction of new technology that saves time and makes real cost savings for dealers.”
