"Paperless dealership" moving closer to reality, says Pinewood

29 October 2007

One of the myths of the IT age - the paperless office -
is moving closer to reality in dealerships, says dealer management systems specialist Pinewood.

The company has noted that some dealerships have lately started to adopt policies designed to reduce paper use.

Pinewood managing director Neville Briggs said: "The 'paperless office' is something that was promised by the IT industry decades ago.

"However, as most people recognise, the ease of printing from a PC and a general attachment to paper means that if anything the growth of IT means we use just as much paper as ever."

But Briggs points out that some dealerships are beginning to follow a trend seen right across the IT industry where the excessive use of paper is increasingly frowned on.

He explained: "There are a number of factors here - the growth of recycling means that people are thinking more about paper use, there is a general trend towards cost containment in dealerships and also IT systems have made it easier in recent years to handle multiple documents comfortably on screen.

"All of these have created a situation where, we believe, paper use in dealerships is falling. For example, some of our customers have told their staff not to print out e-mails."

Briggs added that Pinewood's own Pinnacle DMS contained features designed to reduce paper use.

He explained: "For example, Pinnacle does not automatically send reports to the printer in the same way as most DMS systems, minimising paper wastage."
